This week, something that stuck out to me was the article about Miss America and how people were ignorantly discriminating against her. It completely infuriated me that Americans could be so stupid. Even though I know that people are entitled to their own opinion, I thought that America was supposed to be the land of the free and the equal? Are we really all that equal?
I learned this week that there is still discrimination against people who "look Muslim". It is crazy to me that it is still happening twelve years later after 9-11. I know that it was a horrible event that affected so many lives but how is it that fault of the people who have lived here their entire lives? By reading this article, I literally found myself getting furious with the people that they were quoting and wanted to go whack them on the sides of their head. How can we claim that we are an equal country when we are openly discriminating against other people?
With the poem of the week, I was completely thrown off with how many ways you can interpret the poem. I really enjoyed talking with my peers and seeing things in whole new ways. I learned that everyone makes references differently and connects things to different words to give them meaning. I know personally I made a reference to the silent bells to Polar Express and how the speaker must not have believed in heaven because she couldn't hear the bells.
The most important lesson for this week was probably learning that not all groups will be working completely equally and sometimes you have to make do with members not being there. As stressful as it may be, we will have to figure out a way to get everyone's views in or try to make do without everyone in the group. I think it's pretty important to be able to work in a group with or without members there and it will be a learning experience to get our literature project done.
