Kaylee first learned how to read by being pampered by her adoring siblings as all four children eagerly showed off their own reading skills. The first book she remembers reading independently was given to her when she was around 3 years old in a desperate attempt to get her to give up her beloved pacifier. The memory is vividly implanted into her mind of the little pink piggy saying goodbye to the pacifier and taking the giant step into "big girlhood". Reading didn't become a favorite hobby of Kaylee's until she reached the third grade and discovered the wonders of "The Magic Tree House" series. Reading is a means of entering new worlds and seeing new places that would have never been possible had the book not been inked. Kaylee sees reading as a means of knowledge, comfort, and enjoyment. To be a good reader, Kaylee believes a person should be able to pick up on important details and understand the emotions of the characters as they spin their tale. Good readers can pick up on minor details and get the main idea of the book as a whole. She doesn't believe that a person has to be intelligent to be a good reader; a good reader can just be someone who loves to step into the footsteps of another person for a short while, even if its the magical halls of Hogwarts or the rolling fields of Scotland or the arena to fight to the death in deplorable conditions. Kaylee finds reading the easiest when the reader opens the story with an amazing hook that draws her in and a story line that keeps her eagerly reading until the very end page. Reading is at it's easiest when the reader finds the topic of the book interesting. If a person isn't interested in science fiction, they will not enjoy picking up a science fiction book. Kaylee finds reading extremely hard when the book is written in old English or the book is full of dialogue so it's hard to get a mental image that the author wishes for you to get. Reading is also very hard if the person doesn't have a decent size vocabulary to use as a reference to be able to use when there are unfamiliar words. Kaylee, when stumped by a word while reading, uses other words in the sentence as clues as to what the word could mean. When Kaylee is trying to find a book to read, she generally looks for books with good ratings or of those that contain topics that she is interested in. Kaylee looks at the quality of writing, how the author has introduced their book, and overall a great plot with well-developed characters. Kaylee chooses books with well-developed characters because she enjoys getting to know them inside and out. Kaylee often finds herself reading in any place she can; whether it be the car, the kitchen stools, her bed, her armchair, or even laying on the floor. Reading is a daily thing for her and she often reads more then one book per day. Rarely is Kaylee seen without a book outside of her educational environment and loves to read anything with a good plot line. Overall, reading is an enjoyable passing time that Kaylee often takes part in. She sees reading as a very positive influence on the lives of those who are willing to people up a book. Kaylee feels as if reading is one of the most important things people need in their lives to become well-rounded adults.
Learning how to write was something Kaylee learned as a very young girl, but she didn't learn how to truly write and spin words into a work of art that was worth reading until she was 11 and in the 7th grade. She had an amazing teacher who saw potential in her writing and pushed her to hone in on the hidden talents. Learning to write wasn't learning how to write down words for her; it was how to use those words and how to bring paper to life that came much later in life. Kaylee also learned how to write by observing the techniques used by authors she admired like JK Rowling and Lemony Snicket. Many people write because they have a creative mind and stories literally play themselves out in the minds of such people. Some write because they find solace in giving their characters the emotions the writer is feeling at the moment or even in just getting the emotions out as themselves. Other people write because it's something that they find fun to do. Kaylee writes for all these reasons and finds that she likes to write the most when she has ideas racing through her head at a million miles per second. A good writer always starts with a nice hook to get the reader's attention, whether they be writing an essay or a novel. A person is more likely to flip past the first page of a book if it has an interesting beginning. Another thing that a writer needs to create a good piece of writing is knowledge of the subject they are talking about as well as the meaning of the vocabulary that they will be using. Kaylee finds it senseless to use a word if she doesn't know the meaning of it due to it being harder to use the word in the correct way. In order to write well, the writer needs to be able to paint a picture with their words to clearly show the reader exactly what they want them to see. Kaylee would never use the expression "the apple sat in the bowl", instead she would say "the shiny, red apple sat at an angle in the black bowl that hugged all the sides". To use detail allows a reader to get a better understanding what the writer is imagining. Kaylee enjoys writing fantasy fiction that focuses on separate realms and the things that cannot possibly be real. She believes that by writing about things that cannot be seen in the real world allow for more freedom to create things exactly how she wants them to be. She also enjoys writing books about love, growing up, and friendship; because all of these things are important to people growing into young adults that take their first steps into adulthood. Writing persuasive essays is very enjoyable for Kaylee as well because she likes to express her opinion to those who feel strongly about the same topic that she does. When deciding what she will write about, Kaylee will decide on a topic that she enjoys or she feels strongly about if she is going to be writing an essay. Most of her other writing ideas like short stories derive from dreams and day dreams that seem to have life in them other then the small time period they were in her head. She usually picks her writing based of which images seem to be the most vivid in her mind. Kaylee also chooses things she writes about by randomly choosing topics on generators that interest her and seem like something that would be fun for her to try and experiment with. This allows for her to try new things and expand her knowledge on different writing skills. A writer that can write well knows more then one style of writing. Kaylee likes to be constructively criticized and prefers a response that will show her that she isn't completely perfect and could work on things. She dislikes when people find "nothing" wrong with her writing and prefers to be told to fix at least one thing or another. Another type of response Kaylee enjoys getting is written thoughts about the reader's opinion on the writing to show her if she is reaching a crowd larger then intended. In general, she usually writes when the inspiration hits her and sometimes that might not be for weeks at time while at home. Kaylee will write essays and papers for class very often but for her personal writing it depends on if she has something she wants to write about or not. She enjoys writing random things to bring ridiculous characters to life. Kaylee is very confident about what she writes and feels strongly that she is very good at writing. She also feels that she has room for improvement and is always looking for ways to do so. Writing is something that Kaylee feels like she can stride towards confidently and hopes to perfect her writing even more .
